Peterlin Proves Too Strong; Wins 7th Challenge Series Race in Hibbing

The 2025 Structural Buildings WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series powered by Momentum Truck Group, Freightliner, Western Star and driven by Minnesota Truck Headquarters wrapped up a five night Labor Day weekend swing as the series rolled into the Hibbing Speedway in Hibbing, Minnesota for the second night of the 47th running of the Bill Engelstad Labor Day Shootout and saw hometown racer Kyle Peterlin race off the outside of the front row to withstand an early three-car battle and then drive off to the Labor Day Shootout victory in front of his hometown crowd.

The second night of the two-day invitational night event saw Gunner Frank trip the clock at a 13.449 second lap to set fast time honors. Peterlin, Jeff Provinzino, Adam Ayotte and Shane Sabraski topped the four qualifying heat races early in the night’s program and Derek Vesel won the night’s b-main to set the feature starting lineup.

After heat race action was completed, Sabraski and Peterlin earned the front row for the night’s $3,000 to win, 40-lap feature event, with Sabraski getting the upper hand on the initial start and lead the field into turn number one and lead the opening lap.

The race quickly came to a halt for a crash on the opening lap, which saw Keith Niemi suffer some damage, but he was able to continue on the ensuring restart. When the field went back green with zero laps scored, Sabraski took back off into the lead with Peterlin and Provinzino in close pursuit. The first five laps of the race saw the lead trio sway sliders on each end of the speedway to try to get the upper hand until the second yellow of the race flew on lap 6 for a Derek Vesel spin in turn two.

After another quick caution a lap later, the field was reset once again and, on the restart, Sabraski took back off out front with Peterlin and Provinzino running in a side-by-side battle for second, while Ryan Mikkelson, Joel Bennett, Jeff Massingill and Ayotte and were also wheel to wheel just behind in a battle for 4th.

Petelin was finally able to secure the top spot on lap 8 and looked as if he was going to be able to drive off, but one final caution flew on lap 12 for debris, which kept the field tight once again.

Once the race went back green, Peterlin led at the halfway point over Sabraski, Provinzino, Mikkelson and Massingill, but the track began to tighten around the bottom and Peterlin was able to run in the preferred groove for the final twenty laps en route to the victory.

Provinzino was able to slip by Sabraski into the second spot on lap 25 while the leaders were in traffic and the remaining circuits ran without incident to the checkered. Mikkelson and Massingill rounded out the top five finishers when the checkered flag flew.
