Wissota Late Model Challenge Series
Mass Wires Field; Takes 31st Annual WISSOTA Classic Title
The 2025 Structural Buildings WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series powered by Momentum Truck Group, Freightliner, Western Star and driven by Minnesota Truck Headquarters continued a five night Labor Day weekend swing as the series rolled into the Grand Rapids Speedway in Grand Rapids, Minnesota for the 31st running of the WISSOTA Classic and saw East Bethel, Minnesota’s Dave Mass race off the outside of the front row to lead all 40 laps en route to his first WISSOTA Classic championship.
The rare Friday night event saw Shane Sabraski trip the clock at a 13.438 second lap to set fast time honors. Shane Sabarski, Billy Kendall and Gunner Frank topped the three qualifying heat races early in the night’s program to set the feature starting lineup.
After heat race action was completed, Sabraski and Dave Mass earned the front row for the night’s $3,000 to win, 40-lap feature event with Mass getting the upper hand on the initial start and leading the field into turn number one and lead the opening lap.
With Mass leading out front, Shane Sabraski, Billy Kendall and Gunner Frank began a three-wide side-by-side-by-side battle for second early on with great action ensuring throughout the top ten early.
Mass continued to set the pace out front with Sabraski and Kendall producing a fantastic wheel to wheel battle for second as the leader slipped away from the rest of the field prior to halfway.
Battles continued throughout the field as laps continued to count down as Mass worked through lapped traffic with both Sabraski’s 7a and Kendall’s 99 closing. Mass worked through traffic flawlessly as Kendall and Sabraski worked hard to settle the battle for the runner up spot.
The lone caution flew for a Jeff Provinzino breakdown on lap 35, bunching the field and giving the field a shot at Mass.
On the restart, Mass was able to do what he had been doing all race long and drove off to his second Challenge Series win of his career and second of the week. On the restart, Kyle Peterlin found something on the extreme high side of the speedway and was able to race from just outside the top five into third on the final circuits, nipping Kendall for the final podium spot.
Mass’s victory will extend his series point lead heading into the final four races of the season. Sabraski crossed the line in second with Peterlin, Kendall and Eder, who rounded out the top five finishers.
Shane Sabraski won the WISSOTA Modified and Super Stock features, while David Simpson won the Midwest Modified main event and Austin Carlson won the Pure Stock feature to cap off the night.
